Marek: Respond

Marek hunched over that same desk, writing a response.

Marek: It’s good to hear from you! Kenik got over himself quickly, so you don’t need to worry about that. We’ve been friends pretty much the whole time since you received my last letter.
Marek: It’s a shame your mother couldn’t find Reese. That letter was somewhat time sensitive, but I guess there isn’t anything to be done. Maybe I already told you, but her aunt is supposed to be a wealthy merchant, so maybe have your mother ask around in the markets? And as much as I would love to visit, I don’t think my father would let me... I’ll ask him though! And I'll ask Reese's brother, Veli, if he knows where she lives. Having tea with you would be so much fun. (And if we did play dress up, we could never tell my father!!!)
Marek: Yeah, Kenik usually stands up for me like that. It’s part of why I like him. I just wish he wasn’t so mean in the process! Or mean to me. Sometimes he accidentally hurts my feelings, and I know he doesn’t mean it because he always gets all quiet and apologizes after, but that doesn’t make it easier. He’s been more irritable since the last time Reese visited, and it’s been hard. But don’t worry, we’re still great friends!
Marek: I’m very glad to hear you are feeling better! Hopefully you can keep feeling better and we can keep writing each other! That would be great. Also, I definitely want to see your poetry. My dad makes me read some, but it’s all by a bunch of old people who are dead and people who I don’t care about. But if it was your poetry, I mean, that would be super cool! I mean, you were poetic just talking about snow.
Marek: If you haven’t yet, you should read Knight 1, Lover, and maybe even King 1. They all talk about Xerxia (she’s the Lover), and it’s a lot of fun. Usually I think the Tales are really boring, but Knight 1 and Lover are really interesting. Knight is about the Knight, obviously, but his real name is Kenik and he was actually Xerxia’s child from before she was awakened. It’s about, like, how he gets betrayed by his half brother and tries to get revenge while staying truthful and faithful to his word, but really I like it because the Knight is all, you know, rugged and mysterious and stuff when he talks to people, and super cool and all that.
Marek: And the Lover is about Xerxia, and she’s a royal concubine who gets thrown out for no reason, and then she has to keep selling her body, and everyone thinks she’s terrible for doing it but there’s nothing else for her to do, and then she gets her sorcery and it basically makes her super pretty and she’s like ok, I can work with this, and founds a brothel and uses her sorcery to make all the workers really pretty, and then she uses that to get rich and then become a royal concubine again, but this time she’s like, I’m not about to get cast out again, and then tricks King Zaron (you know, THE KING) into telling her a secret, and she uses it to force him to marry her so she’s queen, and then obviously they both ascend and become gods or whatever but EVERYTHING SHE DOES IS SO COOL!!!! I wish I could be that cool.
Marek: Anyway, in the past months not much has happened. Reese came back once and that was a lot of fun! Though now she like, talks about math and logic and a bunch of stuff I don’t understand. It makes it feel like we don’t know each other much anymore. Do you think people can change so much they stop being friends? Or is it just that she’s away for so long?
Marek: Sorry, that was really sad. I’m glad you wrote! Seeing this has made my day so much better already. I can’t wait for you to write me back.

Marek

Marek: Wish father would let me sign in alchemists ink like Drea...
